Following afternoon tea the AOBA AGM took place in
the comfort of the Bailleul Sgts Mess. Proceedings went at a steady pace,
the general matters being dealt with speedily but fairly. Members were
reminded of the Benevolence side of the association and it’s charity
status. The attendance of Arborfield Old Boys at the Cenotaph parade this
year was detailed, places allocated were down this year so more attendees
were needed to regain the previous number for next year.
At last years reunion, suggestions were asked for
regarding a permanent memorial in Arborfield to all those who have passed
through the school gates, using some of the remaining pieces of the old
camp structure. Earlier this year I put forward my own thoughts in an E-MAIL
TO THE HON SEC. I received a very reassuring reply from Keith Evans
(45A), now installed within the Association Membership Office at the REME Museum. Keith confirms that the
local powers that be are on board the plans to provide a fitting memorial.
Keith has a foot in both camps as he is also a member of the Arborfield
Village History Society so will be keeping close contact with the
interested parties. Just another of the many tasks he takes on on our
behalf. The special vote of thanks given at the AGM to Keith was richly
deserved. There is a pressing need
to get as many suggestions in as possible regarding the future of the bricks
from the rifle range and the pillars and gates of the old school. Although
seen as a long term project the time is now to put forward your ideas to
ensure that the committee have the widest choice laid before them from
which to make a decision. The Australian Army Apprentice Memorial which was
the subject of my e-mail can be viewed from HERE.
Also discussed was a memorial to be erected at the
National Memorial Arboretum site. This would be representative of all the Army
Apprentices Schools. There are several sets of gates available to fill the
requirements.
There has been much talk of the move to St Athan for
all the service training requirements, and of course the REME Museum.
The following link gives an idea of future plans.
