‘A’ Company, C.Q.M.S. Herbert ‘Harry’ McDortch.

Harry is pictured with the Champion Company banner awarded to ‘A’ Company which dates it to around 1949.  He left in Autumn 1949 to return to his regiment ‘The Kings Regiment, Liverpool’, with promotion to R.Q.M.S.

Whilst at Arborfield he was renowned for his prowess in the field of athletics and was a driving force on the hockey field, leading in no little way to ‘A’ Coy. winning the coveted Champions banner.  Before he left he presented the school with the ‘McDortch Trophy’ for hockey.  The extract below comes from the school magazine ‘The Arborfield Apprentice’ published in December 1949.

C.S.M. Harry McDortch back with the ‘Kings Regiment, Liverpool’, the formation flashes on the arms of the two lads far left indicate the location is Berlin where they were stationed in 1950.

Reaching the rank of Major, Mentioned In Dispatches during service in Korea and awarded the M.B.E. Harry is a good example of the Permanent Staff who were hand picked to train and supervise the junior soldiers at Arborfield.

A more detailed record of his life is available from the Obituary published on the web site of ‘The King’s Regimental Association, Liverpool’ and can be accessed by clicking on  HERE.
