Arborfield
AAS by the indoor range.

In
idle moments, whilst waiting your turn on the range, what better way to
mark ones passage through Arborfield. Eric
Wearmouth 53B made his mark which can be seen
at the bottom of the brick. Carved at the time without a thought that these
bricks would become the subject of intense discussion over many years.
There are now increasing signs of rapid deterioration.
More brick signatures can be viewed
by scrolling down the page which is available from HERE.

David Pilcher 52B remembers Eric………
When I arrived at Arborfield in 1952 I
was initially allocated a bedspace quite close to
Eric and Geordie Henry. Coming from
Kent I could just about unravel what Eric said but could not understand a
word uttered by Geordie. Both were
very friendly and we got on well. Our conversations were, however, littered
by me asking Eric: ‘What did Geordie say?’ and he would interpret
accordingly. A few days later we
were shuffled into squads according to our heights, and whilst I was put
into the same squad as Eric, Geordie went elsewhere. I therefore spent my first six months in
the same barrack room as Eric, enjoyed his company and was left in no doubt
that there is life north of Watford.
Unfortunately, after HQ Company, we went our different ways
(companies, trades and cookhouses) and consequently we didn’t see too much
of each other after that. I did,
however, bump into him many years later in a street in Celle – he hadn’t
altered at all. I am still grateful
to those two grand lads from the North East for their friendship during my
first few apprehensive days at Arborfield.
