Commanded 1st Bn. The East Surrey Regiment from November 1946 to July 1948 and then the amalgamated Battalion (XXXI and LXX) from July 1948 to August 1949.

Francis Arthur Herbert Magee, known as’ Maggie', was born on 22nd August 1903 and educated at the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in August 1923 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion with which he served in England, Jersey and Gibraltar until 1932 when he was posted to the Depot for a two year tour. He then re-joined the 2nd Battalion and was appointed adjutant in 1936 and sailed with the Battalion to Shanghai in 1938. He was on the staff of Divisional Headquarters in Malaya and on the capitulation of Singapore became a prisoner of the Japanese. In November 1946 he joined the 1st Battalion in Greece as second-in-command and shortly after was appointed to command the Battalion. In August 1949 he was appointed Sub Area Commander at Nairobi. In 1952 he was appointed to the staff at HQ Eastern Command and in 1953 became Commandant of the Army Apprentices School at Arborfield and retained that appointment until he retired from the Army on 31st December 1955. He was twice Mentioned in Despatches.
