‘Halladale’ photographed at Aden en route to Kure, Japan.
“I think she was originally a captured
German ship. It took 6 weeks to get to Japan in those days. We slept
three-high (on ‘Standees’) and we had about 150 chaps on each deck. The smell
was like a slave ship, especially when it was rough in the Bay
of Biscay, and when one was ill we all were ill. I had a
spell in the sick bay with heat exhaustion as we sailed through the Suez Canal.”
