Following a presentation of how the closure of Rowcroft
Lines and the following move to Lyneham of inter-service training
facilities was proceeding, by Lt. Col. Mike Tizard 76B, the man in charge, there
was a further, more touching, presentation to the A.O.B.A Hon. Sec. David Tich Schofield 65A. Out
of the hat, or paper bag as it happened, a miniature sapling was
produced. This had been cultivated
from an acorn produced by the Memorial Tree, in Rowcroft Lines, which had
been planted by the Schofield family in memory of Ken Schofield 62C, elder
brother of David, who was recalled to H.Q. in 1997. Whatever happens to the Memorial Garden,
and the Tree, during the rape of our old school, by those who will have no
inkling as to the history and traditions of what they are destroying, the
memory of Ken will be preserved.
Along with the many memories of Arborfield preserved
here on the 49ers archive web site, below there are two photos of the
Memorial Tree and Plaque, taken at the 2010 A.O.B.A. Reunion, at a time
when the writing on the wall pointed directly to the closure.
