Saturday.  Muster and March On.

With a touch of irony, or even tongue in cheek, the parade took place in front of the memorial dedicated to the ladies of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (A.T.S.), formed in 1938.  When it opened in 1939, Arborfield started out as an Army Technical School (A.T.S.).  There was some consternation from the boys regarding sporting the same initials as the ladies.  It would be 1946 before the school changed to an Army Apprentices School (A.A.S.) and they could breathe more easily.

The parade would be led by the ‘Leicestershire & Rutland County R.B.L. Pipe Band’, seen here warming up.  Luckily a heavy rain shower had just passed through and the parade and Drum Head service would be free of rain, though very wet of course.  ‘Scotland The Brave’ would be an appropriate piece of music here.

Centre shot is John Wintle 1939, a regular attendee of the A.O.B.A. reunions.  In full regalia is Alec Burt 62A, who would be playing at the Drum Head service and the A.O.B.A. Dinner in the evening.

On the move along Market Garden Way.  The Atholl Highlanders might sound right here.

Pipers come in all sizes.  A favourite march at Arborfield was ‘The Lewis Bridal Song’ (Maries Wedding).

To the right, Roger Wilkinson 61B was determined to attend his Golden Anniversary Reunion and did so with the help of Paul Tonkin 61B who provided the transport to the N.M.A. and also the motive power for Roger’s wheelchair.
