WELCOME

Contributed by George MILLIE (49B)

The year 2005 marks a significant milestone in the passage of recent history, commemorating both the 90th anniversary of the landings on the Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915, and the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in 1945.

These events in the Australian psyche are seen as the epitome of “Mateship”, a concept expressed in the “Last Post” penned by an unknown author.

A soldier cannot always be great, but he can be a gentleman

And he can be a right good pal to his comrades in his squad.

So all you soldiers listen to this!

Deal fair by all and you’ll never be amiss.

Be Brave! Be Just! Be Honest and True men.

If we adopt these sentiments as our credo surely we cannot go astray.

“The September 49ers & Others”  Web site, now renamed "Arborfield & The September 49ers" was created and is maintained for the benefit of all former apprentices, both male and female, of the Army Apprentices Schools, which title includes its many derivatives. The driving force behind its creation can be attributed mainly to a desire to answer the question: “Where are they now?” and to provide a mechanism for locating and reuniting old friends. To that end it has achieved a modicum of success and should be seen as the genesis of a continuing process.

This Web site is considered the rightful joint property of not only those who have so generously contributed material adding to its growth, but to all former apprentices who have visited it. Unlike some published material, electronic and print, all sources are acknowledged, except for a very few which remain to date unknown. Not to do so is merely an overt display of literary bad manners.

It is to be understood that all contributions that are published on “The September 49ers & Others” and the

"Arborfield & The September 49ers" Web sites, both text and images, remain the intellectual property of the contributor/s and may not be used in full or in part without the express permission of the named sources.

The Message Board under the name "The Arborfield 49ers Forum" is made available to anybody who has an interest in exchanging information, thoughts and comments with like minded people.  However, before making use of this independent facility, please read the information available from this link.
